Bonded by Friendship & Film: Hiro Murai and Larkin Seiple
The longstanding creative partnership between filmmaker Hiro Murai (Guava Island) and cinematographer Larkin Seiple (Luce) has included the music video “This Is America” by Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) and the Powerbeats Pro ad titled “Unleashed,” both of which were captured on film. “I was never a very good cinematographer because I didn’t have the details down but had big picture ideas of what I wanted to accomplish,” remarks Murai. “When I work with guys like Larkin, I come into it with broad ideas about the feelings [I want to convey] and have reference points. I know enough about cinematography to be able to explain my ideas to him. Kodak S16mm depicts burning passions in Oliver Laxe’s 2019 Cannes-winning feature O Que Arde (Fire Will Come)
Captured on Kodak Super16mm film, the smoldering Spanish drama, O Que Arde (Fire Will Come), from director Oliver Laxe, screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and blazed a winning trail to the prestigious Jury Prize. The production, about the threatened extinction of rural life in the Galician mountains, received glowing reviews for its striking imagery of ravaged nature, shot by Spanish cinematographer Mauro Herce. It represents the DP’s second collaboration with Laxe as director, following the 2016 Cannes, Critics Week-winning film, Mimosas, also lauded for its majestic camerawork, and also shot on Kodak 16mm film. The pair previously worked together, with Laxe as the producer, on The Fifth Gospel Of Kaspar Hauser (2013), directed by Alberto Gracia, which Herce shot using a 16mm Bolex camera. Kodak filmstocks bring a unique visual poetry to Xavier Dolan’s Cannes contender Matthias et Maxime
Captured on Kodak 35mm, 65mm and Super 8mm filmstocks, Matthias et Maxime, writer-director-editor Xavier Dolan’s engaging drama about a group of friends in their late 20s, makes its world premiere In-Competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The film, which will screen in 35mm print, marks somewhat of a homecoming for Dolan, who has written and directed eight feature films in total, seven shot on film. All of his films have premiered at Cannes, with the exception of Tom at the Farm, which premiered at the 70th Venice International Film Festival in 2013. Dolan has won many awards in Cannes for his work, including the Regards Jeunes prizes in 2009 for I Killed My Mother and 2010 for Heartbeats, the 2014 Jury Prize for Mommy, and the 2016 Grand Prix and Ecumenical Jury prizes for It's Only the End of the World.
